Official Fence Codes for New Providence, New Jersey (downloadable) 310-32-Fences. A. Fences shall be considered as accessory uses to a principal permitted use and are permitted in all zones. B. In any required front yard, no fence or wall shall be permitted which materially impedes vision across such yard above the height of 30 inches. C. Fences located in side or rear yards shall not exceed six feet in height, except when used to screen recreational vehicles, in which case the fence shall not exceed the height of the recreational vehicle. D. All fences shall be located such that both sides of the fence may be maintained from the property on which it is located. E. Fences shall be constructed in such a manner that the dressed side of such fence, where applicable, shall face the adjacent property or the public right-of-way excluding railroad property, and all supports for said fence shall be on the interior of said fence and property. This provision shall not preclude the construction and maintenance of a shadowbox type fence, provided that the dressed side of the fence material shall face the adjacent property or public right-of-way and shall be of the same texture, material and color.

The written history of New Providence begins in 1664 when James, Duke of York and brother to King Charles II, purchased the land that became known as the Elizabethtown Tract from the Lenape Native Americans. Its first European settlers were members of a Puritan colony established in 1720, which was the first permanent settlement of its type.
