FENCE CODES AND ORDINANCES

FENCES:

4 feet and Under -- No fence permit is needed.
Over 4 feet to 6 feet – Town Fence Permit required.
Over 6 feet – Building Permit required.
Plot Plan -- All builders should consult the property’s plot plans before construction to make certain that the fence does not overlap on neighbor’s property. Plot Plans are required for all fence permits. Indicate on plot plan where fence will be constructed.
Good side -- “Good side” of fence must face out.
Inspection – Inspection by Zoning Compliance Officer must be scheduled after fence is constructed. Call Building Department to schedule.

Glen Ridge Code Section 17.20.060 Fences.

“No fence or barrier exceeding four feet in height above finished grade shall be erected or maintained in any front yard and no fence or barrier exceeding seven feet in height above finished grade shall be erected or maintained in any rear or side yard. A permit shall be required for any fence or barrier over four feet in height except that no permit shall be required for any fence or barrier required by any ordinance and no permit shall be required for temporary construction fences or required for temporary construction fences or barriers. Any fence or barrier installed pursuant to a permit granted under this title shall be installed so that its finished surface faces the exterior perimeter of the property on which it is installed.”

Property Survey?

When starting a fence project it is vital to know that the proposed fence will be on your property. This is important to you, the town officials and your neighbors.

1. If you already have an up-to-date property survey, it may have enough detail to locate your property corners, where you may find or can place stakes. This will help you discern your property lines.

2. If you do not have current valid property survey, you will have to hire a Land Surveying Company to create one and that will usually require your property deed.

At least three business days, prior to outdoor construction or digging, contractors and property owners – whoever is excavating – must call New Jersey One Call at 811 or 800-272-1000 and take the following steps:

Wait for the site to be marked with paint, flags or stakes. Yellow indicates the presence of underground natural gas lines.
Respect the marks and dig with care.
Hand dig within two feet of buried piping and facilities.
Be mindful that inclement weather may wash away the painted markings.

Additional Information

Glen Ridge traces its beginnings to 1666 when sixty-four Connecticut families led by Robert Treat bought land from the Lenni lenape Indians and named it New Ark to reflect a covenant to worship freely and without persecution. The territory included the future towns of Bloomfield, Montclair, Belleville, and Nutley. When Bloomfield seceded in 1812, Glen Ridge was a section "on the hill" composed mostly of farms and woodlands with the exception of a thriving industrial area along the Toney's brook in the Glen.
